1954
Stu Berry and Ted Smith founded Berry & Smith Trucking. Stu initially purchased trucks to transport fruit, while Ted was always interested in trucking.
1958
Stu and Ted combined their resources and formally incorporated Berry & Smith Trucking Ltd. The Company started with medium-duty trucks delivering fruit and coal regionally. Stu and Ted's partnership was marked by respect and compassion. These values are extended to their employees and business partners to this day.
1962
Berry & Smith expanded its operations by starting to transport people, securing its first school bus contract.
1970s
In the early 1970s, Berry & Smith purchased its first tractor-trailer, enabling the company to transport freight around the Okanagan Valley, later expanding to larger markets like Vancouver. In 1977, the company entered the public transit sector, providing transit services in Penticton becoming one of the early participants in the Municipal Systems Program.
1989
To reach larger markets like Vancouver, Berry & Smith opened an office in Burnaby.
1994
Responding to an expanding intermodal market, the company acquired a commercial yard and a small office in Delta, which continues to serve as the primary intermodal transportation hub.
1995
Penticton Transit Service Ltd. took over the operation of the Okanagan Similkameen system, serving Naramata and Okanagan Falls, and continues to do so.
1997
Stu retired in 1997, and the company has since been run by a management team led by sons Matt (former president) and Mark (former Vice President) until 2022.
2006
Berry and Smith expand into Alberta and freight brokerage markets with acquisition of MKS Enterprises.
2012
Berry and Smith Trucking Fleet reaches 100 power units.
2016
B&S staff and company donate generously to Penticton Hospital Expansion.
2018
Berry and Smith expands Transit service into South Okanagan, now servicing, Osoyoos, Penticton, Naramata, OK Falls, handyDART and Route 70 Kelowna bus. Berry and Smith also begins servicing CSF school district in South Okanagan.
2019
Berry and Smith invest in automation, improving company efficiency and service to customers.
2022
Berry and Smith receives COR certification in recognition of top-tier safety program.
Present Day
Berry and Smith Trucking has steadily grown into a North American-wide carrier, with offices in Penticton and Delta, BC as well as yards across BC and Alberta. Stu’s legacy of respect and compassion lives on through a profit-sharing system, ensuring employees share in the company’s success. The company is now in it’s third generation, with grandsons Parker and Kaolin occupying the President and Vice-President roles. Berry and Smith continues to uphold its reputation for quality, honesty and excellence and remains a cornerstone of the community it serves.
